Science Study Targets the Cycle Life Barrier in Lithium Metal Batteries
Key Takeaways
- A paper titled "Unlocking cycle life of lithium metal batteries" appears in Science, Volume 393, Issue 6818, dated September 2026.
- Cycle life, not energy density, remains the primary barrier keeping lithium metal anodes out of commercial cells.
- Dendrite growth, dead lithium, and continuous electrolyte consumption are the main causes of capacity fade.
- Longer cycle life would benefit electric vehicles, electric aviation, grid storage, consumer electronics, and space hardware.
