Marine Corps expands AI logistics testing for Pacific operations
Marine Corps Forces, Pacific is testing a theater-level AI logistics platform aimed at simplifying one of the hardest parts of operating across the Indo-Pacific: figuring out what units need, where supplies should be positioned, and how to match demand with available materiel before shortfalls become operational problems.
According to Defense One, the service is extending use of Tagup’s Manifest platform through a modification to a $2.1 million Small Business Innovation Research contract. The new work broadens the platform’s role beyond tactical and operational uses and applies it to selected theater sustainment cases in support of MARFORPAC.
The problem the Marines are trying to solve is straightforward but consequential. When planners need to determine whether a deployed unit has the equipment and supplies required for its mission, they often have to query multiple databases and manually cross-reference supply levels, maintenance records, and other sources before building a spreadsheet or planning product. That process takes time, depends on fragmented information systems, and can make it harder to generate fast, defensible decisions across a vast operating area.
The Indo-Pacific raises the stakes. Forces are dispersed over long distances, transportation is constrained, and sustainment planning has to account for both ongoing operations and the possibility of rapid shifts in demand. A system that can fuse data and suggest better positioning of supplies could reduce friction in day-to-day planning and potentially improve readiness when conditions change.
What the Manifest platform is meant to do
Tagup describes Manifest as a decision-support platform that pulls from a range of data sources to help commanders and planners decide what materiel and other resources should be placed where, when, and in what quantity. Defense One reported that the company frames the platform as a way to connect detailed maintenance and supply data to theater-level courses of action that historically were often built from higher-level analysis.
On the supply side, the company says the platform includes information on more than 4 million vendors and more than 16 million parts. It is designed to surface factors such as lead times, vendor locations, and sources of supply. On the demand side, it can ingest detailed maintenance activity and other unit-level signals that may help forecast what equipment or replacement parts will be required.
That combination matters because sustainment decisions are not only about what is in the warehouse today. They also depend on how long it takes to replenish stock, whether alternate suppliers exist, and how the condition of vehicles or aircraft may alter future demand. If the platform can reliably connect those inputs, it may give Marine planners a clearer picture of where bottlenecks are forming and what tradeoffs come with different resourcing choices.
Why the Marines are interested now
The Marine Corps has spent years emphasizing distributed operations and expeditionary logistics, especially in the Pacific. That concept places pressure on sustainment systems because smaller, more dispersed units need support without the luxury of large, fixed supply hubs close at hand. A logistics tool that reduces the burden of manually stitching together information fits squarely into that broader push.
Defense One reported that some Marine units are already using Manifest at the tactical and operational levels. Tagup said one application in Marine medical logistics produced a 25 percent reduction in purchasing costs and a 30 percent reduction in materiel handled, while maintaining readiness. Those figures help explain why the service would be interested in testing the software in a more ambitious theater-level role.
Cost and handling reductions do not automatically translate into strategic advantage, but they do suggest the system may be able to remove waste from logistics workflows. In a region where distance magnifies every inefficiency, even modest improvements in forecasting, purchasing, and inventory positioning can have outsized effects.
From spreadsheets to decision support
The more significant shift may be less about automation than about the level of analysis being attempted. Tagup’s chief executive told Defense One that theater-level planning has historically been conducted at headquarters without full use of granular maintenance and readiness data. In other words, organizations may possess detailed records on every maintenance action taken on a vehicle or other system, but those records are not always incorporated into larger sustainment planning decisions.
The promise of AI in this context is not that it replaces logisticians. It is that it helps them work across a wider and denser set of variables than a manual process can comfortably handle. A planner can still make the judgment call, but the software may reduce the time needed to gather inputs and reveal patterns that would be hard to see across multiple disconnected systems.
That distinction is important because military AI projects often attract attention for autonomy or targeting. This effort is narrower and more practical. It focuses on planning support, supply visibility, and resource allocation. Those are less dramatic applications of AI, but they are often the ones most likely to gain traction because they address persistent administrative and operational pain points.
What to watch next
The contract modification signals continued Marine interest, but it is still a test rather than a fleetwide transformation. The key questions now are whether Manifest can perform reliably at theater scale, whether its recommendations are trusted by planners, and whether the platform can integrate cleanly with the Marine Corps’ existing logistics and maintenance data environment.
There is also a broader institutional question. The service may be able to prove that the software works in selected use cases, yet still face the harder challenge of turning successful pilots into standard operating practice. That typically requires not just good analytics, but data governance, process redesign, and leaders willing to shift away from established spreadsheet-driven workflows.
Even so, the Pacific sustainment challenge is large enough that incremental gains matter. If the Marines can reduce the time needed to understand what units require and where resources should be staged, the payoff would extend beyond efficiency. Better logistics planning can improve readiness, resilience, and the ability to sustain dispersed forces under pressure. For an AI program inside the Pentagon, that is a grounded and strategically relevant objective.
