Google says AI Mode now exceeds one billion monthly users and is rolling out a redesigned AI-powered Search box, Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default model, and new agent-style capabilities.

At I/O 2026, Google signaled that conversational AI search is no longer an add-on. The company says AI Mode now has more than 1 billion monthly users and is being woven more deeply into standard search results.

One year after launch in the United States, Google says AI Mode now has more than a billion monthly active users globally and is driving longer, more multimodal, and more planning-oriented queries.

Google has shut down Project Mariner, its experimental web task agent, and says the technology has moved into other products including Gemini Agent and AI Mode.

Google is expanding AI Mode in Chrome with side-by-side browsing and search across recent tabs, aiming to make AI assistance part of the browser flow instead of a separate destination.
