When Paralives launched in early access, Danielle Udogaranya did not feel excitement first. She felt her hand ache. The pain was anticipatory, the muscle memory of a decade spent hunched over 3D software, coaxing coils, braids, and kinks into shapes that game engines were never designed to hold. Udogaranya, who is better known in life-simulation circles as Ebonix, has built custom hair content for over ten years. Her work exists to help players see themselves rendered on screen. And yet, with a new game in front of her, her first reaction was a weary question she has asked herself many times before: why is this still on me?
"I thought to myself, why am I still having to do this?" she told WIRED. She is a technical artist by trade and holds a degree in psychology, a combination that shapes how she talks about the problem. This is not simply a matter of taste or representation as an abstract ideal. It is a technical debt problem, a design pipeline problem, and an industry habit problem, all layered on top of each other.
A Decade of Building What Games Left Out
Fans of titles like The Sims have long navigated to Udogaranya's sites to download hair packs inspired by styles that simply do not ship in the base product. The scale of that demand is striking. The Ebonix Patreon currently counts more than 115,000 members, and its library spans hundreds of items, split between free downloads and paid ones. That is a substantial audience built almost entirely around a gap.
The gap exists because natural Black hairstyles have historically been an afterthought in game development, and the underlying technology for rendering them has improved slowly. When a category of hair is missing for decades, the resulting cottage industry is not a quirky subculture. It is a workaround, and every workaround has a cost measured in hours and wrist strain.
Why 'Killmonger Locs' Became the Default
Udogaranya points to a specific culprit that players will recognize instantly. In Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger wore a stiff, short, dreadlocked style that became visually iconic. It then became a default. The look, which Udogaranya refers to as "Killmonger locs," has turned up across old and new franchises alike, including Tekken 8, Spider-Man 2, Apex Legends, and Horizon Zero Dawn.
"With new games coming out now, I'm still seeing the issues, and I'm still seeing the 'Killmonger locs,'" she said. "God forbid we get more than three options."
The geometry problem underneath the aesthetic one
The reason for this repeat appearance is not creative laziness in every individual case. It is that textured hair has been built on code that was not authored with it in mind. Udogaranya's explanation is refreshingly concrete. Straight hair, she notes, is easy to finish: you taper the ends, and it reads as polished. Apply the same technique to a textured style and the result falls apart. Her description of the outcome is blunt and memorable. Adding a Black texture to that pipeline, she says, makes it look like a hot dog.
Immovable, cylindrical locs, by contrast, are forgiving. They hold their shape, they require less simulation work, and they survive the shortcuts that studios take when hair is not a priority. The style that keeps appearing in games is not necessarily a statement about Blackness. It is a shape that the tools can handle.
A Long History of Black Hair as an Afterthought
This is not a new story that happened to arrive with modern graphics budgets. Udogaranya's critique reaches back to the earliest days of the medium. In the 8-bit era, Black hairstyles in games leaned on minstrel-like stereotypes rather than observation. SEGA's Heavyweight Champ, released in 1976, is one early example she cites. Then came the fighting game boom of the 1980s and 1990s, when rosters expanded and more characters appeared on screen, but the vocabulary for depicting Black hair did not expand with them.
The result is a strange continuity. A player can boot up a game released decades ago and a game released this year and find the same limited shelf of options, rendered at wildly different fidelity. The polygon count went up. The range did not.
What Better Tools Would Actually Change
Udogaranya's work sits at the intersection of art and engineering, which is why her frustration is not aimed at individual artists. A custom content creator can spend long, tedious hours achieving precision that an integrated toolchain would make routine. That asymmetry is the heart of her argument. When straight hair is cheap to finish and textured hair is expensive, studios under deadline pressure will produce more of the former and less of the latter, and the pattern compounds across every project.

Every time she opens a new life-sim and feels that familiar ache, she is measuring the distance between what the technology can do and what the technology was built to do.
Until that distance closes, the same locs will keep showing up, the same three options will keep appearing in character creators, and the same creators will keep doing the work that studios did not plan for. Udogaranya has made clear which of those she intends to keep changing, and which she is tired of repeating.
