Ancient Burial Mounds an Hour North of Stockholm

The people who raised them belonged to a culture at least 2,500 years old. They were not Vikings. The Goths' fixation on timing centered on a recurring cycle of human and animal sacrifices held at midwinter. The rites were gruesome, and they ran on a strict eight-year rhythm. The belief behind them was stark: if the great midwinter sacrifices were not performed every eight years, the following eight years might bring catastrophe.

The sacrifices usually began at the height of winter, falling between February 6 and February 8. Hitting that narrow window reliably, cycle after cycle, requires far more than a rough feel for the seasons. It requires a calendar.

An Astrophysicist Says He Found the Calendar

Goran Henrikson, an astrophysicist and former lecturer at Uppsala University in Sweden, says he has recovered the schedule that governed those rites. He says he has discovered the calendar that regulated the dates of the Great Midwinter Sacrifice, which took place every eight years.

His reconstruction ties the ritual calendar to features built into the landscape. Rows of posts, in his reading, served as sight lines: markers that told observers when the full Moon would rise at a specific point on the horizon and when the Sun would rise in the direction that signaled the start of a new sacrificial cycle.

Henrikson set out the argument in a paper presented at the 2014 meeting of the European Society for Astronomy in Culture. The work addresses how the beginning of each eight-year cycle was fixed — and why the Moon, not the Sun alone, was the key.

Fixing the Start Date by the Full Moon

According to Henrikson, the sacrifice at Old Uppsala took place every eighth year, and the opening date was defined by the full Moon falling between January 28 and February 26 in the Gregorian calendar. That is a tight window in an otherwise loose seasonal world, and landing on it in advance calls for the ability to anticipate lunar phases rather than merely watch them.

Archaeological evidence appears to line up with the idea. Excavations at the site uncovered two long rows of postholes, one of them roughly 850 meters in length. In Henrikson's interpretation, those rows marked the northern limit for the rising of the full Moon and the direction of the rising Sun at the moment when it was time to start a sacrificial cycle.

Royal Mounds Tied to the Ritual Year

The site's most visible monuments are three “royal” burial mounds, dated to between 450 and 550 A.D. Henrikson writes that they are oriented in such a way that they could have been used to regulate the sacrificial calendar — meaning the graves of the elite may also have doubled as instruments for keeping time.

The exercise also hints at what the ritual demanded of the people who kept it. Predicting a full Moon within a four-week window is not a one-off feat; it requires watching, recording and passing knowledge down across generations. An eight-year cycle is long enough that no single priest could rely on memory alone.

A Culture That Read the Sky

Uppsala today is a modern Swedish city only a short distance from Arlanda international airport. Walking through the hills on a windy July afternoon, a visitor can only imagine what the culture that once occupied them looked like in its prime.

What stands out is the contrast between the violence of the rites and the sophistication of the astronomy behind them. These were people who, by Henrikson's account, had an appreciation of the natural world — including the celestial sphere — that is difficult for modern observers to fully grasp. Their calendar was not an abstract exercise. It was bound up with a belief that the rhythms of the sky and the obligations of the community moved together.

What the Reconstruction Rests On

Henrikson's case is assembled from three strands: the archaeological remains of the mounds and the posthole rows, historical records, and astronomical retrocalculation of full Moon dates. Each strand exists on its own, but the calendar claim depends on how they are joined together — which is why the argument was presented to specialists in the astronomy of ancient cultures rather than treated as settled fact.

That makes the finding a notable example of archaeoastronomy, the practice of reading ancient monuments for evidence of systematic sky-watching. If the reconstruction holds, the Goths of Old Uppsala were not simply marking the seasons. They were running a predictive model of the Moon's behavior, refined over generations, and anchored to a date they believed could not be missed.

Whether the mounds and posts were always intended as calendar instruments, or whether that function emerged gradually, remains an open question for further work at the site. What the record does show is that an ancient northern people, far removed from the Vikings of popular history, invested real effort in the sky — and did so with a precision that still surprises.
