Geely has built an off-roader for the horsepower era
Off-road vehicles used to sell capability by emphasizing what they could endure: rough trails, bad weather, river crossings, damaged roads, and long distances far from pavement. That formula has not disappeared, but it is being overlaid with a new one. Rugged SUVs are now also expected to deliver headline power figures, software-defined handling, and the kind of straight-line performance once reserved for performance sedans and supercars.
Geely’s new Galaxy Cruiser 700 is a sharp example of that transition. As described by New Atlas, the boxy plug-in hybrid SUV produces an extraordinary 1,113 horsepower from a tri-motor setup, placing it among the most aggressive expressions yet of the high-performance electrified off-roader. But the more revealing part of the announcement may be how Geely combines that output with a full set of trail-oriented systems, packaging the vehicle as both a powerhouse and a purpose-built utility machine.
That dual identity is increasingly important. The global SUV market is crowded with vehicles that borrow visual cues from traditional off-roaders while behaving primarily like road cars. Geely appears to be making a different argument with the Cruiser 700: that a modern hybrid off-roader can be fast, complex, and electronically sophisticated without giving up the features buyers associate with real trail hardware.
Power that changes the category conversation
The number that immediately dominates the Cruiser 700 story is the 1,113-horsepower system output. New Atlas reports that Geely says the vehicle has the highest combined output among mass-produced plug-in hybrid off-road vehicles. The company also claims a power-to-weight ratio of 392 horsepower per ton, which it describes as the highest of any mass-produced off-road vehicle worldwide.
Even in an era of inflated power numbers, those are difficult figures to ignore. They place the vehicle in a discussion that extends beyond rugged SUVs and into the territory of high-end performance EVs and hybrids. New Atlas explicitly compares the Cruiser 700’s power-to-weight proposition with vehicles such as the Lotus Eletre R, Lamborghini Urus SE, and Rivian R1S Tri-Motor, concluding that the Geely stands out on that metric.
For Geely, the point is not only speed. Massive system output creates a different kind of flexibility for a large off-road vehicle, especially one expected to carry accessories, passengers, and terrain-oriented hardware. High reserve power can support steep climbs, rapid traction adjustments, and better sustained performance when the vehicle is loaded or operating in difficult conditions. Whether most buyers need anything close to 1,113 horsepower is another question, but that is no longer the only point of such a figure. The number itself has become part of the product category’s competitive language.

Hybrid hardware with real electric range
The Cruiser 700 is not a conventional hybrid dressed up for adventure branding. New Atlas says it uses a 47.14-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack supplied by CATL and can deliver an electric-only range of roughly 100 to 115 miles, or about 165 to 185 kilometers. That is a substantial battery for a plug-in hybrid and suggests Geely is treating electric driving as a meaningful operating mode rather than a compliance feature.
That matters because it points to a broader shift in how plug-in hybrids are being used. Earlier generations often relied on small batteries that provided limited electric capability before the gas engine resumed the main workload. Larger-battery PHEVs can serve a more flexible role, handling shorter daily use on electricity while preserving long-range or remote-area capability through the combustion component. In an off-road context, that combination can be especially attractive: electric torque, silent low-speed operation, and no need to depend solely on charging access in remote areas.
Using an LFP battery also reflects an increasingly common tradeoff in the industry. LFP chemistry is typically favored for durability, thermal stability, and cost advantages, even if it often concedes some energy-density benefits compared with nickel-rich chemistries. For a large, heavy, capability-first SUV, that can be a rational decision.
Software is now part of the drivetrain
What separates the Cruiser 700 from a simple horsepower exercise is the depth of its control systems. New Atlas reports that the vehicle uses a fluid-coupled dual-motor rear axle layout with differential locks. It also features an AI-powered four-wheel-drive system that can automatically switch between front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive depending on conditions.
That arrangement says a great deal about where performance utility vehicles are headed. Mechanical systems still matter, but the real differentiator is increasingly software coordination: how quickly torque can be redistributed, how sensors interpret the terrain, and how the vehicle mediates between stability, traction, turning radius, and driver intent. The Cruiser 700 adds features such as continuous automatic obstacle avoidance, tank turns, crab-walk mode, and the ability to keep driving after a tire blowout.

Some of those functions will inevitably be viewed as demonstration features as much as daily-use tools. But even that has strategic value. They showcase the extent to which advanced motion control is becoming a selling point in itself. New Atlas says Geely’s proprietary GVMC, or Geely Vehicle Motion Control, system allows the SUV to pass the moose test at 50 mph. That is an especially telling claim because it links software management not only to off-road theatrics but to evasive safety performance on pavement.
Size, utility, and the new luxury-rugged formula
The Cruiser 700 is physically substantial. New Atlas reports a length of 200 inches, width of 78.7 inches, and height between about 74.6 and 75.7 inches. This is not a compact crossover pretending to be expedition-ready. It is a large SUV with the stance and dimensions to support its image.
Inside, Geely appears to be pairing that scale with comfort and customization. New Atlas says all seats offer heating and ventilation, and the vehicle includes more than 50 pre-reserved installation points for off-road modifications. That is an important detail because it suggests the company wants the Cruiser 700 to appeal not only as a finished luxury product but as a platform that owners can personalize for different use cases.
This blend of luxury, software, electrification, and modular utility is becoming one of the defining formulas in the next SUV cycle. Buyers no longer divide vehicles neatly into commuter, luxury, and off-road categories. They increasingly want all of those qualities at once, even if very few owners will ever use the full technical envelope their vehicles advertise.
Why this launch matters
The Cruiser 700 matters because it shows how quickly the off-road segment is being rewritten by electrified architectures. Geely is not simply adding a battery to a conventional SUV. It is using electrification to expand what the category can claim, from power output to traction logic to multi-mode chassis behavior. The result is a vehicle that feels less like an incremental hybrid and more like a prototype for where mainstream rugged SUVs may be headed.
Whether the market ultimately rewards 1,113-horsepower off-road hybrids at scale remains to be seen. But the direction is clear. Capability is now being measured not only in clearance, articulation, and towing, but in battery size, software intelligence, and power density. On those terms, the Galaxy Cruiser 700 is not subtle. It is Geely’s declaration that the next generation of off-roaders will be defined as much by computing and electrification as by gears, tires, and suspension travel.
