Long-term progress, not early perfection, appears to define powerlifting success

A new international study of competitive powerlifters suggests that early struggles in the sport matter far less than an athlete’s willingness to keep showing up. Drawing on competition records collected between 2012 and 2026, researchers found that long-term participation and repeated exposure to competition were closely tied to better outcomes, while failed lift attempts early in a lifter’s career had little apparent impact on eventual peak performance.

The research included data that initially covered more than 420,000 gym-goers worldwide before narrowing to a final cohort of 6,524 athletes that could be compared on a consistent basis. The final sample was restricted to lifters who took part in full-power meets, meaning competitions that include the three traditional lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift.

The paper, published in BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation, included contributions from University of the Sunshine Coast Senior Lecturer in Clinical Physiology Dr. Dan van den Hoek. Its findings add a useful long-view perspective to a sport that has grown rapidly in visibility but has not always been studied in terms of how performance develops over many years.

Age matters, but so does staying in the sport

Among the strongest predictors of performance was age. According to the study, peak lifting performance was typically observed at around 27 years old. But that figure tells only part of the story. Researchers also found that many athletes did not post their best results until around their 10th competition, underscoring how improvement in powerlifting tends to unfold over time rather than in a quick early burst.

The study pointed to a broader pattern: athletes who remained engaged in the sport for 200 weeks or more tended to perform better over the long run. Peak performance was usually reached after roughly four to six years of competition. Higher competition frequency was associated with reaching that peak earlier, suggesting that regular exposure to competition environments may accelerate development.

That matters because powerlifting is a sport where technical consistency, confidence under pressure, and accumulated training adaptations all interact. The findings imply that competitive experience itself may be part of the developmental process, rather than simply a stage where finished athletes display abilities they have already fully built in training.

Early missed lifts were not a reliable predictor of long-term limits

One of the study’s most practical findings is also one of its most encouraging. Athletes who failed attempts early in their powerlifting careers were not necessarily setting themselves up for weaker long-term outcomes. In other words, a rough start did not appear to define a lifter’s ceiling.

That may be especially relevant for novice athletes who can find the sport unforgiving in its early phases. Powerlifting competitions require not only strength, but also technical precision and command selection. Missing attempts can happen for many reasons, including nerves, poor timing, aggressive jump choices, or ordinary inexperience. The data suggest that those setbacks should not automatically be read as indicators of limited future potential.

Instead, the researchers’ broader conclusion was that persistence may be the more meaningful variable. Sticking with the sport, entering meets regularly, and developing over multiple years appear to matter more than avoiding failure in the opening stages of a competitive career.

Why the findings matter now

In recent decades, powerlifting has expanded in popularity, helped by social media and wider public familiarity with compound barbell lifts. Yet even as participation has grown, long-term athlete development in the sport has remained only partly described. That gap has practical consequences for lifters and coaches, who often have to make decisions about goals, timelines, and training expectations with limited evidence about what normal progress actually looks like over time.

The study attempts to fill part of that gap by offering benchmark-style observations on progression and peak timing. For coaches, that can support more grounded planning. For athletes, it can temper unrealistic expectations that progress should be immediate or linear. The research instead paints a picture of powerlifting as a long-horizon sport in which sustained participation is a core ingredient of success.

That perspective may also help reduce the distortions created by highly visible standout performances online. Social media tends to reward exceptional lifts and dramatic transformations, but large-scale performance data suggest that the real story for most competitors is slower and more cumulative. Many lifters may not approach their best results until years into their competitive development.

A data-backed case for patience

The study’s final cohort included 62% male and 38% female lifters, all selected using criteria meant to allow meaningful comparisons across competitors. By focusing on official competition outcomes rather than anecdotal reports, the researchers were able to examine performance trajectories across a substantial timespan and a sizable athlete population.

That does not mean the paper answers every question about how elite powerlifting performance develops. But it does offer a clear takeaway: the path to strong results is usually measured in years, not weeks, and early failure is not destiny. If anything, the results argue for more patience from athletes, more realistic sequencing from coaches, and more emphasis on retention in the sport.

For a discipline built around objective numbers, that may be one of the most useful messages available. The competition total still matters, but so does the timeline required to build it. According to this analysis, lifters who endure the awkward early phase, keep competing, and accumulate experience may be giving themselves the best chance to reach their eventual peak.
