Mercor confirmed the incident in a March 31 email to staff, saying that a recent security event affected its systems along with thousands of other organizations worldwide. The report indicates that other major AI labs are reevaluating their relationships with Mercor as they assess the incident’s scope.

For years, public discussion around AI competition has focused on chips, models, and consumer products. This story shifts attention toward a less visible dependency: the vendors that organize human labor to create bespoke datasets for training and evaluation.
