A University of Cambridge-led team used airborne LiDAR to build 3D maps of the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland.
The survey covered 569 km² and identified more than 6 million individual trees, with the exact height of each recorded.
2.65 million trees — just over 40 percent — were under 5 meters tall, indicating young, naturally regenerating growth.
Regenerating trees cluster near existing forest edges, but some had established more than half a kilometer away.

A University of Bristol-led study published in the Journal of Applied Ecology compared grazing, muirburn and commercial honey bee apiaries across 20 Scottish moorland sites.
Spring sheep grazing was linked to 63% less spring nectar for emerging bumblebees than ungrazed plots.
Introduced honey bee hives caused only a small change to plant-pollinator network structure and no measurable effect on the quantity or quality of pollen bumblebees collected.
Fieldwork covered May to September and recorded over 1.6 million flowers and more than 5,000 plant-pollinator interactions across 58 plant species and 405 pollinator species.

Long bones were sharpened into tools, indicating multifunctional use of remains.
The practice may be part of broader Iron Age funerary rituals, including exhumation and exposure.
Experts debate whether marks are definitively from brain removal or other manipulation.

Archaeologists found a gold dental ligature in remains from Aberdeen, Scotland.
The device likely helped retain a tooth or support a prosthetic replacement.
Radiocarbon dating placed the remains broadly between 1460 and 1670.
The find suggests advanced dental treatment existed well before modern formal dentistry.

The H100 Fife project is presented as the UK’s first end-to-end hydrogen system for homes.
The source text argues the project’s economics are weak even before operating costs are counted.
Critics say the trial risks prolonging the gas distribution model rather than delivering scalable decarbonization.
