Why Ford's SVT Contour Won Over the U.K. but Never the U.S.
Key Takeaways
- Ford sold essentially the same performance sedan as the SVT Contour in the U.S. and the Mondeo ST200 in the U.K. more than 25 years ago.
- The 1998 SVT Contour made 195 hp and 165 lb-ft from a tuned 2.5-liter V6; the 1999 ST200 made 202 hp and 173 lb-ft.
- Both cars ran a manual gearbox only, hit 60 mph in roughly 7.5 seconds, and were praised for steering, grip and a firmer ride.
- Ford USA borrowed the Mondeo's 10.9-inch front rotors but skipped the ST200's 17-inch wheels, leaving the SVT with 16s.
