UK Advances Design for Next-Generation STEP Fusion Plant to Boost Efficiency
Key Takeaways
- The UK's STEP programme is advancing design work on a next-generation fusion plant, with efficiency treated as a central design objective.
- Efficiency in fusion concerns net electricity — the output remaining after magnets, cryogenics, heating and pumping consume their share.
- STEP's spherical tokamak approach favours a compact device, which tightens margins for shielding, breeding blankets and heat exhaust.
- Key bottlenecks include heat exhaust, tritium breeding, neutron-resistant materials, remote maintenance and recirculating power.
