A growing number of teenagers dealing with weight concerns are turning to AI chatbots for help creating diet plans. It seems like a reasonable idea — AI models can process nutritional data, calculate macronutrient ratios, and generate personalized meal suggestions in seconds. But a new study reveals that the resulting plans may be dangerously inadequate, undercounting daily caloric intake by nearly 700 calories and potentially putting adolescent health at risk.
The research, which tested five major AI chatbots including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Llama, found that all of them regularly proposed dietary plans for teenagers that were equivalent to skipping an entire meal each day. For adolescents whose bodies are still growing and developing, chronic caloric restriction at this level could interfere with bone development, hormonal maturation, cognitive function, and long-term metabolic health.
How the Study Worked
The researchers prompted each AI model with scenarios representing typical teenager requests: a 15-year-old wanting to lose weight, a 16-year-old athlete looking to optimize nutrition, and a 17-year-old seeking a healthy eating plan. They specified age, gender, height, weight, and activity level — the standard inputs that any legitimate nutrition calculator would use to determine caloric needs.
The AI models generated detailed meal plans with specific foods, portion sizes, and macronutrient breakdowns. These plans appeared professional and comprehensive. However, when the researchers independently calculated the actual caloric content using standard nutritional databases, they found a consistent pattern of underestimation averaging approximately 700 fewer calories per day than the minimum recommended intake for adolescents.
Why AI Gets This Wrong
Several factors contribute to the systematic undercounting. First, the training data for these models likely includes a disproportionate amount of adult diet content — weight loss blogs, fitness websites, calorie-counting apps — that is designed for adults seeking to reduce caloric intake. When applied to adolescents, these adult-oriented patterns produce recommendations that are inappropriately restrictive.
Second, AI models may conflate healthy eating with low-calorie eating, reflecting a cultural bias present in their training data. The internet is saturated with content that equates smaller portions and lower calorie counts with health, without adequately distinguishing between appropriate weight management for adults and the very different nutritional needs of growing adolescents.
Third, the models appear to underestimate portion sizes. When specifying meals like "a chicken breast with brown rice and steamed vegetables," the AI may assume portions appropriate for a small adult but insufficient for a growing teenager with higher metabolic demands.
The Adolescent Health Risk
Chronic caloric restriction during adolescence carries specific and serious health risks that do not apply to adults. Adolescence is the second-most intensive growth period in human life after infancy, with rapid increases in height, bone density, muscle mass, and brain volume. Insufficient caloric intake has been linked to delayed puberty, reduced bone mineral density, impaired cognitive development, and the establishment of metabolic patterns that predispose individuals to eating disorders.
The psychological dimension is equally concerning. Teenagers who follow AI-generated diet plans and experience hunger may interpret that hunger as a sign that the diet is working rather than as a warning signal that they are not eating enough. The perceived authority of AI recommendations may discourage teens from questioning whether the advice is appropriate.
A Gap in AI Safety
The study highlights a significant gap in AI safety frameworks. While AI companies have invested heavily in preventing harmful content in categories like violence and self-harm, nutritional advice has received comparatively little attention. Diet plans that systematically undercount calories for minors represent a form of health misinformation that current safety filters are not designed to catch.
The researchers recommend that AI companies implement specific safeguards for nutritional advice directed at minors, including age-appropriate caloric minimums, mandatory disclaimers encouraging consultation with healthcare providers, and restrictions on generating weight-loss plans for users who identify as under 18.
Until AI companies implement more robust nutritional safeguards, the study's message is straightforward: AI chatbots should not be used as primary sources of dietary advice for teenagers. Teens seeking dietary guidance should consult with pediatricians, registered dietitians, or school health counselors who can assess individual needs and provide age-appropriate recommendations.
