How AMC Invented the Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty and Free Loaner Car
Key Takeaways
- No law requires automakers to offer new-car warranties; the practice became industry standard through competition.
- AMC's Gerald Meyers — purchasing manager, VP of product engineering, later CEO — introduced the AMC Buyer Protection Plan in 1972.
- The plan was the industry's first 12-month or 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty with a loaner car and expense reimbursement.
- Coverage excluded tires but included spark plugs, brake linings, and light bulbs.
