Enceladus Plumes May Reveal Signs of Life More Easily Than Expected
Key Takeaways
- Two new studies from Freie Universität Berlin suggest biosignatures on Enceladus could be easier to detect than previously thought.
- The first study finds ocean droplets freeze more slowly than expected, concentrating salts and organics into distinct regions of ice grains that later fragment in space.
- The second study shows methane-producing bacteria could survive and generate methane under simulated Enceladus conditions.
- Cassini previously flew through Enceladus' plumes and detected salts and organic compounds, hinting at a habitable subsurface ocean.
