Why IMAX 15/70 Cameras Are So Loud — and Why Filmmakers Still Use Them
Key Takeaways
- IMAX 15/70 cameras can produce incredible film, but loud operation is a major tradeoff for filmmakers.
- The noise is mechanical, tied to the size and weight of the film format and its transport mechanism.
- Productions work around it with soundproofing, camera distance, alternate coverage and dialogue replacement in post.
- The format persists because filmmakers value its image quality enough to absorb the added cost and complexity.
