Natural Hydrogen Reservoirs Could Serve as Underground Storage, Study Suggests
Key Takeaways
- A new study proposes using naturally occurring hydrogen reservoirs as underground storage sites.
- Transitioning to zero-carbon energy requires storing vast amounts of hydrogen, and geological formations offer far greater capacity than surface facilities.
- Natural reservoirs have already demonstrated they can contain hydrogen over geological timescales, a key advantage.
- Challenges include sealing integrity under repeated injection cycles, geochemical reactions, microbial consumption, monitoring, and regulation.
