Carbon Thermal Batteries Target Round-the-Clock Cheap Energy for US Industry
Key Takeaways
- GrafTech International, a major carbon and graphite products manufacturer, is collaborating with thermal energy storage company Antora on carbon-based thermal batteries.
- The technology targets round-the-clock, low-cost energy for US industry, storing electricity as high-temperature heat rather than in chemical form.
- Carbon and graphite are suited to the role because they tolerate extreme heat, conduct thermal energy well and are already produced at industrial scale.
- The value proposition rests on decoupling when a plant buys electricity from when it consumes heat, letting facilities run continuously on cheaper power.
