Ancient Retrovirus May Have Shaped Human Brain Divergence
Key Takeaways
- Researchers studied PTERV1, an endogenous retrovirus family found in chimpanzees, bonobos and gorillas but absent in humans.
- Chimpanzee-specific PTERV1 insertions on chromosome 19 were linked to silencing of LINC00662 in brain organoids.
- The work identifies a possible regulatory mechanism in human-chimpanzee brain divergence, not a single-cause explanation for human cognition.
