A UK national prospective multicenter cohort study published online Sept. 16 in Anaesthesia examined perioperative GLP-1 RA use and outcomes, timed to the Association of Anaesthetists annual meeting in Liverpool, Sept. 16–18.
The study, led by Thomas E. Potter, M.B.B.S., of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, covered 47,039 patients at 119 UK sites; 2.9 percent reported receiving GLP-1 RAs.
Incidence of pulmonary aspiration and/or regurgitation was 1.41 percent in the GLP-1 RA cohort versus 0.12 percent in the non-GLP-1 RA cohort, an odds ratio of 11.39.
Among patients taking GLP-1 RAs, these events occurred most often during emergence from anesthesia.
