Locally Grown Crops Could Expand Childhood Malnutrition Treatment
Key Takeaways
- A study led by Dr. Aurélie Bechoff at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, with professors Efrat Monsonego-Ornan and Ram Reifen, examined a therapeutic food made from locally available crops.
- Current ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) treatment reaches only about 30% of children who need it, according to the study published in Current Developments in Nutrition.
- Conventional RUTF formulations often depend on ingredients produced in wealthier countries, including relatively expensive powdered milk, creating cost and supply barriers.
- The tested formulation, called ChSMS, replaces milk and peanuts with chickpeas, sorghum, corn and soybeans, all widely grown in sub-Saharan Africa.
