Kyocera, Tohoku Laser Method Cuts Back-Reflected Light 95% on Silicon Photonics Chips
Key Takeaways
- Kyocera and Tohoku University developed a world-first laser method to cut back-reflected light by 95% on silicon photonics chips.
- Back-reflections can destabilize lasers and degrade performance in photonic integrated circuits.
- The breakthrough could help overcome the lack of practical on-chip optical isolators.
- Further work is needed to scale the method for commercial manufacturing and verify long-term reliability.
