Oklahoma’s Ames Crater May Date to a Mass Extinction
Key Takeaways
- Ames crater is about 10 miles wide and buried beneath northwestern Oklahoma.
- New zircon evidence dates the impact to roughly 370 million years ago.
- The previous estimate placed the crater near the 467-million-year-old Ordovician meteor event.
- The new date overlaps the Frasnian-Famennian mass extinction interval but does not prove causation.
