US EV Sales Fall 30.7% as High Gas Prices Fail to Win Over Buyers
Key Takeaways
- U.S. EV sales fell 30.7% through September 2026 and now account for 6% of new vehicle sales, down from 8.5% a year earlier.
- Europe's EV share stands at 23.2%, a contrast analysts attribute largely to U.S. policy changes rather than consumer preference.
- The expiration of a $7,500 federal tax credit pulled purchases forward and left a thinner buyer pool behind.
- Eliminated federal EV support, relaxed fuel-efficiency rules, lost charging infrastructure funding, tariffs, and a Chinese vehicle software ban have all constrained the U.S. market.
