How a Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder Toppled a 20-Year Auction Record
Key Takeaways
- A black 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder, one of only 51 built, sold for $10.9 million at an RM Sotheby's auction in Maranello, Italy, in May 2008.
- The car, powered by a 2.9-liter naturally aspirated V12 on a 94.5-inch wheelbase, was formerly owned by actor James Coburn.
- The sale broke a record held since November 1987 by a 1-of-6 Bugatti Royale 'Kellner Coach' that brought £5,500,000 (about $9,867,000 at the time) at Christie's in London.
- The Ferrari result likely marked the first eight-figure automobile auction and set a precedent for later Ferrari GT valuations.
