GLP-1 RAs Linked to 11-Fold Higher Odds of Aspiration Under Anesthesia
Key Takeaways
- A UK national prospective multicenter cohort study published online Sept. 16 in Anaesthesia examined perioperative GLP-1 RA use and outcomes, timed to the Association of Anaesthetists annual meeting in Liverpool, Sept. 16–18.
- The study, led by Thomas E. Potter, M.B.B.S., of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, covered 47,039 patients at 119 UK sites; 2.9 percent reported receiving GLP-1 RAs.
- Incidence of pulmonary aspiration and/or regurgitation was 1.41 percent in the GLP-1 RA cohort versus 0.12 percent in the non-GLP-1 RA cohort, an odds ratio of 11.39.
- Among patients taking GLP-1 RAs, these events occurred most often during emergence from anesthesia.
