Psilocybin Users With Depression Still Seek Mental Health Care, Study Finds
Key Takeaways
- A UC San Diego School of Medicine study found that people with depression who use psilocybin seek mental health care at rates similar to nonusers.
- The research, published in Psychological Medicine, analyzed 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health data — the first NSDUH iteration to track how recently respondents used psilocybin.
- The sample covered 6,793 people ages 12 and older who reported a past-year major depressive episode, with an estimated 7.3% reporting psilocybin use.
- Psilocybin users reported higher unmet needs for mental health services, suggesting the compound is used as an alternative or adjunct rather than a replacement for conventional care.
