Vitamin D2 Supplements May Lower Vitamin D3 Levels, Scientists Warn
Key Takeaways
- Research published in 2025, highlighted by the University of Surrey, found that vitamin D2 supplementation can lower the body's levels of vitamin D3, the form produced by sunlight exposure.
- Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is typically made by exposing fungi or yeast to ultraviolet light, while vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form synthesised in human skin after UVB exposure.
- U.S. National Institutes of Health guidance notes that D3 tends to raise vitamin D levels more and keep them elevated longer than D2.
- The liver converts vitamin D into 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the marker measured in blood tests; D2 and D3 produce different versions of it.
