Lithuania Offers to Cover Costs of a Permanent US Military Base
Key Takeaways
- Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius said Lithuania is ready to cover the costs of a permanent U.S. military base if Washington agrees to establish one.
- President Donald Trump said Monday he would consider the request, calling Lithuanians friends and great people and saying the administration would look at it.
- The U.S. has kept an armored battalion of almost 1,000 troops in Lithuania since 2019 under overlapping rotations rather than a permanent basing agreement.
- Sinkevicius said he proposed converting the rotation into a permanent presence to Trump envoy John Coale during a meeting in Vilnius last month.
