A Gravitational Tug-of-War Deep Inside Earth Is Altering Day Length
Key Takeaways
- Earth's rotation varies by milliseconds, and scientists have tracked the shifts for decades.
- Known causes include atmospheric and oceanic changes, major earthquakes, and melting ice.
- A new Nature study proposes a gravitational tug-of-war between Earth's inner core and mantle irregularities as a deep-Earth mechanism.
- The authors reconstructed the interaction's effect on rotation from 1964 to 2019 using seismic and flow models.
