Coalition Sues Trump Administration Over CAFE Fuel Economy Rollback
Key Takeaways
- A coalition of environmental and consumer protection organizations filed a lawsuit in Washington, D.C., challenging the Trump administration's final rule rolling back federal CAFE fuel economy standards.
- The weakened standards would have saved 64 billion gallons of gasoline and delivered $35 billion in consumer savings over the lifetimes of covered vehicles.
- The rule permits manufacturers to build a model year 2031 fleet less efficient than the model year 2024 fleet already on the road.
- Administration projections cited in the suit show Americans spending over $1,600 more on fuel over a vehicle's life, while NHTSA estimates over 121 billion additional gallons consumed through 2050.
