Japan’s first Aegis System Equipped Vessel, or ASEV, has reached a visible new stage of construction with the installation of its massive integrated mast. It offers one of the clearest signs yet of the scale of a program designed around missile defense at a time when Japan is expanding both the size and the ambition of its surface fleet.
The warship is being built as one of two large ASEVs, vessels whose primary stated mission is missile defense. Why the Mast Matters
The newly fitted mast is important because it makes the ship’s mission legible. The first ASEV was laid down in July 2025 at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Nagasaki. The second was laid down in February 2026 at Japan Marine United’s Isogo shipyard near Tokyo. Splitting the program across two major shipyards reflects the industrial importance of the class as well as the urgency attached to bringing the ships online.

Japan’s Ministry of Defense is aiming to place the first vessel into service before the end of the country’s 2027 fiscal year, which runs from April 2027 to March 2028. The second is expected to follow during the 2028 fiscal cycle, extending into 2029. Those dates matter because they show the program is not a distant concept. It is moving on a concrete schedule, with visible milestones already being met.
Part of a Broader Naval Trend
Japan’s new ship also fits a wider global pattern. Advanced destroyers, especially those optimized for anti-air and missile defense missions, have been getting larger. As sensors, launch systems, power demands, and mission complexity increase, navies are accepting larger hulls as the price of relevance. The ASEV is an especially clear expression of that trend.
That does not mean every navy will build something similar. But it does mean Japan’s choice is part of a broader recognition that high-end fleet defense is becoming more technically and logistically demanding. The line between destroyer and cruiser has blurred in part because the missions themselves have expanded beyond older categories.
What the Program Signals
The installation of the mast is a construction update, but it also signals something larger about Japan’s defense posture. The country is investing in ships that are bigger, more specialized at the outset, and structured for future offensive and defensive growth.
