Largest Survey of US Lawyers Finds Nearly Half Report High Burnout
Key Takeaways
- A new study is the largest survey of mental health among actively licensed US lawyers to date and the first large-scale measurement of work-related burnout in the profession.
- Researchers analyzed responses from more than 39,000 working lawyers randomly invited from all US geographic regions, weighting results to ABA 2024 National Lawyer Population Survey benchmarks.
- Nearly half of respondents reported high or very high burnout, which stood out as the factor most closely tied to psychological distress.
- Depression, anxiety, stress and hazardous drinking were common, and greater work-family conflict was associated with greater distress even after accounting for other factors.
