Bayesian Statistics Reveals How Edge Waves Shape Shallow-Water Coastlines
Key Takeaways
- Researchers led by Cassandra S. Henderson used Bayesian probability methods to analyze infragravity waves in shallow water.
- Data came from a network of pressure and velocity sensors at Torrey Pines State Beach in California collected over 60 days.
- The maximum a posteriori (MAP) technique allowed the team to separate edge waves from other components of the measured signal.
- Edge waves, which run parallel to the shoreline, were found to account for roughly 28 percent of infragravity wave energy.
