New tool helps researchers flag untrustworthy clinical trials
Key Takeaways
- INSPECT-SR is a new tool for assessing whether randomized controlled trials are trustworthy enough to include in systematic reviews.
- It was developed by the University of Manchester, Cochrane and the University of Colorado with more than 40 institutions worldwide, and published in BMJ.
- The framework guides reviewers through 21 structured checks across four domains: post-publication notices; study conduct, governance and transparency; text and figures; and study results.
- Unlike risk-of-bias or methodological quality instruments, it targets the trustworthiness of trial data and can help identify fraudulent studies among other problematic trials.
