Cities Keep Funding Sports Stadiums Despite Weak Economic Returns
Key Takeaways
- Taxpayers in the U.S. and Canada contributed about $33 billion to sports arena construction between 1970 and 2020, covering roughly 73% of total costs.
- The NFL reported $14.5 billion in revenue in 2025, while MLB and NBA each earned around $12 billion.
- New stadiums like the Washington Commanders' planned venue ($4 billion) and SoFi Stadium ($6.75 billion) carry massive price tags often subsidized by public funds.
- Teams promise jobs, economic growth, infrastructure, tax revenue, and rising property values, but economists say these benefits are vastly overstated.
