Aspirin Overdose Behind Woman's Hallucinations and Gunfire, Doctors Say
Key Takeaways
- A 65-year-old Michigan woman arrived at the emergency room by ambulance asking to see a psychiatrist because she was seeing dead people.
- She had fired a gun at her hallucinations once, yet remained calm and alert with normal vital signs aside from high blood pressure.
- Blood tests showed mild metabolic acidosis and elevated salicylates; she later acknowledged taking more than 15 aspirin pills daily for weeks.
- She also had tinnitus, a classic sign of salicylate toxicity, leading to a diagnosis of aspirin overdose.
