Endurance Exercise Rewires Liver Metabolism Differently in Males and Females
Key Takeaways
- University of Missouri School of Medicine researchers found endurance exercise alters liver cell energy production through different molecular pathways in male and female rats.
- Female rats produced more proteins tied to the Krebs cycle, while male rats chemically modified more existing proteins to trigger the cycle.
- Both sexes showed improved liver health: reduced liver fat, better cholesterol use and disposal, and fewer fibrosis markers.
- Male animals expelled more cholesterol from the body than females, though reasons for the divergence remain unclear.
