Aerial LiDAR Maps Reveal 6 Million Trees Regrowing in Scotland's Cairngorms
Key Takeaways
- A University of Cambridge-led team used airborne LiDAR to build 3D maps of the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland.
- The survey covered 569 km² and identified more than 6 million individual trees, with the exact height of each recorded.
- 2.65 million trees — just over 40 percent — were under 5 meters tall, indicating young, naturally regenerating growth.
- Regenerating trees cluster near existing forest edges, but some had established more than half a kilometer away.
