Construction and trades workers faced the highest opioid death rates in Ontario

A new report from the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network says workers in construction and trades accounted for about one-third of opioid toxicity deaths in Ontario cases where occupation was known between 2018 and 2024. The report examined opioid toxicity deaths in Ontario from Jan. 1, 2018, through Dec. 31, 2024, using population-based health-care data from ICES, the nonprofit research institute that uses health data to study major health issues. Researchers linked that data with coroner information to assess how opioid toxicity deaths varied across employment sectors, including differences in death rates, how those rates changed over time, and the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Across the full period, Ontario recorded nearly 16,000 deaths from opioid toxicity. The study found the construction and trades sector was particularly hard hit. It posted the highest death rates among the occupational groups analyzed, and those rates increased substantially during the COVID-19 pandemic before remaining elevated.
