The Navy has put a name to a previously low-profile missile program
The US Navy has publicly identified a new long-range air-to-air weapon called “Malice,” formally designated the AIM-424 Long Range Air-to-Air Missile, or LRAAM. In a statement cited by Breaking Defense, the service said the missile is being developed as a next-generation system meant to strengthen fleet defense and preserve what it described as a decisive air-domain advantage against advanced threats.
The disclosure matters because it moves the program from scattered imagery and partial references into a more defined public view. The Navy is still withholding core performance and schedule details, but it has now confirmed the missile’s intended role, some physical characteristics, and the broad set of aircraft it is being designed to support. That alone is enough to signal that naval aviation is preparing for a much longer-range air combat environment than the one associated with today’s standard beyond-visual-range weapons.
A weapon built around distance
According to the Navy, the missile is designed to strike targets at ranges exceeding 250 nautical miles, or about 287.7 miles. That figure immediately places Malice in a category focused on reach, standoff, and the ability to engage threats earlier in the fight. The service said the program is intended to improve range, lethality, and combat effectiveness for Marine and naval aviation forces defending fleets, national interests, and the homeland.
That emphasis on distance is not a cosmetic upgrade. It reflects an operating environment in which survivability increasingly depends on detecting and engaging hostile aircraft before they can close in, launch, or force US and allied aircraft into less favorable positions. The Navy framed the system as part of integrated deterrence, a phrase that links tactical weapons development to a broader effort to shape adversary decision-making before a conflict begins.
The service also said LRAAM is meant to preserve a “first look, first shot, first kill” advantage. That language suggests the missile is being built not just to fly farther, but to fit into a larger sensor-and-shooter network in which aircraft can exploit earlier detection and hold threats at risk sooner. Even without classified specifics, the intended operational logic is clear: longer reach can expand tactical flexibility, complicate enemy planning, and potentially reduce exposure for US pilots and high-value naval assets.

Designed for current and future aircraft
The Navy said Malice is being designed for fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-generation aircraft platforms. That is one of the most significant details in the public description because it indicates the missile is meant to bridge multiple eras of combat aviation rather than remain confined to a single specialized platform.
Breaking Defense reported that the missile measures 13.5 feet in length and 13.5 inches in diameter. Those dimensions help explain why the Navy highlighted compatibility across a range of aircraft types while still keeping the exact integration picture opaque. A missile intended for both legacy and newer stealth aircraft must balance size, carriage options, and aerodynamic performance in ways that shape how broadly it can be deployed.
Publicly released imagery has already offered hints of that strategy. The Navy published a photo in April showing four of the missiles loaded onto an F/A-18E Super Hornet for what it described as a test event. A separate photo released earlier in August showed one missile mounted in the internal weapons bay of an F-35C, alongside an AIM-120 AMRAAM on the bay door. Those images suggest the service is working to make Malice relevant to both carrier-based strike fighters that carry weapons externally and stealth aircraft that gain survivability from internal carriage.
If that integration path holds, the Navy would gain a missile that can be used across a broad mix of carrier air wing assets while also preparing for future aircraft generations. The practical effect is potential continuity: a single long-range air combat weapon concept that can evolve with the fleet instead of being tied to one platform generation.
Public disclosure remains partial and deliberate
Even with the new name and official acknowledgment, the Malice program is still mostly hidden from public view. The Navy told Breaking Defense that additional details about capabilities and deployment timelines remain classified for operational security reasons. That leaves major questions unanswered, including how the missile is guided, how it fits into cooperative targeting architectures, when it could reach the fleet, and what production scale the Navy envisions.

Still, the partial disclosure is revealing in its own way. The service appears willing to show enough to shape external understanding without exposing the program’s most sensitive attributes. That can serve several purposes at once: informing industry and Congress that the program is real, signaling capability development to competitors, and reassuring operators that longer-range air combat remains an active modernization priority.
There is also a timing component. Breaking Defense noted that the missile appears to have flown under much of the media’s radar until the Navy announced at the Tailhook Symposium over the weekend that the system had undergone testing, citing a report from Aviation Week. In other words, the public acknowledgment did not come at the very start of the effort. It came after enough visible testing and imagery had accumulated to support a more formal unveiling.
Why the announcement matters now
The Malice reveal lands at a time when air combat modernization is increasingly defined by range, survivability, and adaptability. The Navy’s description points to a weapon shaped by all three. It is long-range by design, intended to fit multiple aircraft generations, and presented as a tool for defending fleets against advanced threats.
That does not mean the public yet knows how transformative the missile will be in service. The most important technical details remain secret, and the Navy has not disclosed deployment timelines. But the announcement establishes a clear direction: naval aviation wants a much longer reach in the air-to-air fight, and it is building a weapon specifically framed around that need.
For defense watchers, the significance is less about the nickname than the strategic message behind it. The Navy is signaling that its future air battle depends on extending engagement distance while preserving flexibility across manned tactical aircraft. Malice is now the clearest public marker of that push.
