How Not to Lose the Science Race: The Question That Defines an Era
Key Takeaways
- Science, Volume 393, Issue 6818 (September 2026) carries a one-page piece at page 1305 titled 'How not to lose the science race.'
- The race metaphor is imperfect because scientific knowledge is cumulative and non-rivalrous, yet it points to real asymmetries in who can generate options under pressure.
- Losing is best understood as structural dependence, a thinning talent bench, lost agenda-setting power and weak translation capacity rather than a single defeat.
- Decisive inputs include stable long-horizon funding, research infrastructure, talent pipelines, open exchange, translation capacity and public trust.
