Snake Appearances Shape Whether People Feel Fear or Fascination
Key Takeaways
- Researchers at the University of Aveiro and the University of Brasilia studied whether snake physical characteristics relate to how people perceive them.
- The findings, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, show that similar-looking snakes provoke similar reactions of fear, disgust and positive impressions.
- Sandra C. Soares, senior author, said the work grew from a broader lab focus on how humans and other primates perceive evolutionarily relevant threats such as snakes.
- The team emphasized that rapid visual detection of a snake differs from actually being afraid of it, motivating the question of what makes some snakes appear more threatening.
