Polygenic Scores in the NHS: The Debate Is Not Really About the Evidence
Key Takeaways
- A Nature Medicine commentary published 25 September 2026 argues the debate over polygenic scores in the NHS is not primarily about the evidence.
- Polygenic scores aggregate many small-effect genetic variants into a single probabilistic risk estimate rather than a diagnosis.
- Predictive performance varies by condition and by how closely the target population matches the research cohort, raising equity questions around ancestry.
- The NHS is a focal point because national-scale deployment turns methodological concerns into system-wide policy consequences.
