Fruit Fly Study Reveals How Neural Gates Switch On Short-Term Memory
Key Takeaways
- A study led by NYU Langone Health in fruit flies confirmed a long-standing suspicion about how the brain encodes short-term memories.
- The research was published online October 7 in the journal Nature, with Katherine Nagel as senior investigator.
- Flies exposed to apple cider vinegar moved toward the odor and kept going for seconds after it disappeared, showing the memory persisting.
- Brain monitoring revealed two different neuron types responding to the smell with similar patterns of activity, forming a gate.
