New Antibiotic Combinations Target Persistent Bacterial Vaginosis
Key Takeaways
- Monash University and Bayside Health's Melbourne Sexual Health Centre are testing new antibiotic combinations and longer courses to treat persistent bacterial vaginosis.
- A 2025 New England Journal of Medicine study found that treating male partners reduces BV recurrence in women by more than 60%, a finding that won the Australian Infectious Diseases Research Centre Eureka Prize.
- The latest study in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Women's Health identifies two distinct pathways to repeat infection: reinfection and persistence of BV bacteria.
- Persistence means bacteria survive initial therapy before couples resume sex after treatment, pointing to a need for more intensive female-focused treatment.
