Pneumonia Hospitalizations Can Reveal Undiagnosed Blood Cancer, Study Finds
Key Takeaways
- A University of Gothenburg study followed 156 adults hospitalized with invasive pneumococcal disease in Sweden between 2018 and 2023, with a median age of 70.
- One in four patients in the pneumococcal group had M protein in their blood, a marker associated with blood cancer and precursor conditions.
- Testing led to seven blood cancer diagnoses, 12 diagnoses of a condition that can progress to blood cancer, and eight cases of immunodeficiency.
- Seven patients with immunodeficiency began preventive treatment against new severe infections after their condition was identified.
