Survey: Most U.S. Women Know Breast Cancer Risks, but Few Act on Them
Key Takeaways
- A survey sponsored by the American Cancer Society found most U.S. women recognized breast cancer risk factors, but only a minority acted to lower their risk.
- The survey involved 33,000 women already enrolled in a major ACS cancer prevention study, so their awareness may exceed that of the general population.
- While 91% knew exercise could help prevent breast cancer, only 27% met ACS weekly activity recommendations.
- Eighty-five percent understood alcohol can raise risk, yet 69% reported some alcohol intake.
