Apple announced Friday it is changing macOS Full Disk Access settings to stop third-party developers from misusing the permission to reach data such as message histories.
The move follows a column by Jason Aten, who said Meta's AI agent Muse sent an unsolicited notification referencing a private Apple Messages thread he never authorized Muse to read.
Meta CTO David Singleton said Muse's Messages integration is opt-in and requires both macOS Full Disk Access and an in-app Messages connector to be enabled.
macOS security expert Patrick Wardle questioned that reasoning, noting Full Disk Access lets an app read virtually any non-root file, from browsing history to chats.
