Fat-Storing Gene PLIN4 Emerges as Possible Contributor to Anorexia Risk
Key Takeaways
- A Michigan State University-supported study identified rare PLIN4 variants as a possible contributor to anorexia nervosa.
- Patients with anorexia were nearly four times as likely as a reference population to carry rare, potentially damaging PLIN4 variants.
- PLIN4 is primarily active in fat and muscle rather than the brain and helps regulate how cells store fat.
- The finding challenges the dogma that anorexia-related genes are expressed in the brain, according to researcher A.J. Robison.
