APS Moves to Extend Four Corners Coal Plant to 2038, Reversing 2031 Pledge
Key Takeaways
- APS told its Resource Planning Advisory Committee it signed a coal supply extension with Navajo Transitional Energy Co. that would run Four Corners until 2038, past the prior 2031 closure date.
- Sierra Club says the extension reverses a retirement commitment, increases air pollution, continues water use, and will likely raise costs for ratepayers who could save millions under earlier retirement.
- Independent studies cited in the analysis link fossil-fuel pollution to about 8 million deaths per year, with Navajo Nation members facing decades of the plant's impacts.
- Tó Nizhóní Ání director Nicole Horseherder called keeping a 60-year-old coal plant open to prop up NTEC 'delusional.'
